UNDER THE ACT OF CONGRESS, MARCH 3, 1879 / CURB REPORTER Steed from a flamboyant tree of the South Pacific were sent by Dr. Joseph Placak, Jr., to his brother, Fred, in Tryon, who gave them to Tom Costa. Mr. Costa planted the seed and now has several flamboyant trees growing in his green house ... At Ki wanis Tuesday Chas. J. Lynch, chairman of the committee for the care of invalids, announced that in addition to the 21 wheel chairs the club now has in use by in valids in this section, a number of crutches are being made to lend to temporary cripples. C. H. Helms who has a hobby workshop is njaking the crutches, Tryon «ulders Supply Co., donated the pber, W. E. Spangle the iron Its to fasten the crutches, Ar ledge Hardware the varnish, and Buchanan’s the brushes to do the painting. The only thing the club paid for was the rubber tips to go on the ends of the, crutches. It just shows you how many peo ple are glad to have a part in doing good for suffering humani ty ... . And \vhile there are a few who evade the draft there are many who are eager to do their part for their country and "homeland. Some boys have lied about their ages in order to get in before they are old enough; thin boys have filled up on bananas just before being weigh- ! ed; a number have had serious I -CONTINUED PROM PAGE ONE.— I MRS. FARMER MOORE Mrs. Farmer Moore, 80, step mother of T. A. Rippy of Lynn, died early this morning at the Confederate Home in Columbia, S. C.- She had been ill for several days. Mrs. Moore formerly lived at Lynn and funeral services will be held at Pacolet Baptist church. Interment in Tryon cemetery. Business Circle Tonight The Young Women’s Business Circle will meet tonight at 8 o’clock with Miss Pearline Parker. CARD FROM JAPAN Mrs. Lissie Morgan has heard from her son, Lieut. Otis Morgan, who was captured by the Japs at the fall of Corrigedor. She re ceived a card saying that he was uninjured and in good health. The card was furnished, by the Japanese government— but was written by Lieut. Morgan. Mrs. Morgan was a guest at Melrose Lodge when news of her son’s capture was announced. The card was the first direct message she has had from him. BEACH HOME SOLD Miss Mary Beach has sold her home in Tryon and has returned to her former home at Terre Haute, Indiana. ORA SWEETENBURG Ora Sweetenburg Simpson, well known former Tryon colored citi zen, died early Wednesday in De troit. Services will be held in Try on, but date not announced.
